"Who's Coming for Dinner" Newsletter Article Ending
Wednesday, January 21, 2026
The last three paragraph were left off of Tiffany Chan's article on Saw-whet Owls, "Who's Coming for Dinner", in the January 2026 newsletter, https://www.toddbirdclub.org/newsletters/Todd_Nuthatch_2026_January.pdf. The missing paragraphs are below:

Project Owlnet has also revealed that Saw-whet Owl numbers are higher than previously believed. They were once thought to be rare simply because they are so well camouflaged and seldom seen. During the day, they remain still and silent, blending seamlessly into hemlock and rhododendron.

Some Saw-whet Owls do winter in Pennsylvania. Places like Presque Isle, Allegheny National Forest, and the Allegheny Front offer the dense shelter they prefer and may provide opportunities to glimpse these elusive beauties. Still, seasoned birders warn that sightings are rare—many report seeing only three or four in decades of birding, and some have never seen one in the wild at all.

Attending an owl banding evening in the fall, is a good way to get a better chance of seeing one of these birds up close, plus it will give you an appreciation of the science and research that is currently being done on these special birds.
